Girls On the Run (GOTR) of Winchester is proud to collaborate with ShoeBox Recycling to promote the reuse of shoes as they train and ready themselves for the upcoming Spring 5K at Jim Barnett Park. This great new opportunity allows for participants, runners, friends, family, local businesses to recycle gently used shoes, raising awareness about the global impact of shoe recycling, helping to put reusable, re-wearable shoes on the people who need affordable options and turning their recycling collection into a great, green and meaningful community service and fundraising opportunity. Everyone is a winner here!

“We are excited to work closely with Shoebox Recycling as a way to benefit the environment, people in the developing world and the over 100 local participants in our Winchester Council,? said Allison Major, Council Director of GOTR of Winchester. ?Girls on the Run is all about empowering girls to make healthy choices that are good for themselves and others and their ability to have a positive effect on the world around them,? Major continued.

ShoeBox Recycling is proud to be a for-profit recycler of shoes. They mastered the most powerful ?R? in the recycling triangle, REUSE, with all of the shoes collected destined as affordable footwear domestically and internationally. With over 300 million pairs of perfectly reusable shoes hitting landfills each year, they are looking to change the way people think about their shoes and start a REUSE MOVEMENT.

?ShoeBox Recycling is so naturally aligned with the mission of Girls on the Run,? said Ira Baseman, Godfather of Sole at ShoeBox Recycling. ?The SoleMate program will be a great way for the girls to directly see the connection between their actions and how they can benefit another person?s life directly.

The Girls on the Run will have ShoeBox Recycling collection boxes near the Fireman?s Shelter at the 5K site on Sunday, so be sure to bring in your gently used footwear to the 5K. As of May 20, you can also find collection boxes at the following locations:
